Description

Building on the Introductory Course’s focus on a strong foundation of phonological awareness and decoding and spelling of single-syllable words, the Intermediate Course emphasizes multi-syllable word analysis. We start with a thorough review of Introductory Course concepts and an opportunity to celebrate and problem-solve the implementation of methods and procedures. Next, we review the Sound and Meaning strategies for breaking apart words covered in the Introductory Course. Participants learn a powerful letter- strategy to break longer words apart, learn strategies to negotiate the choices of common multi-syllable spelling patterns, and do a deep exploration into the meanings of the most common Core English word parts.  You will learn the adapted American Sign for the meanings of the most common prefixes and suffixes. The Wired for Reading Introductory Course is a prerequisite for this course.

Optional: One credit through Seattle University College of Education or 10 Washington State clock hours. Clock hours earned may apply towards Washington State teacher certification and for advancement on the salary scale.

If desired, this course may count toward CCDEI clock hours because the content directly supports equity and inclusion in literacy instruction. Educators learn to recognize and reduce barriers that can limit participation for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Through structured, responsive teaching practices, educators create classrooms where students experience belonging, participate meaningfully, and engage with grade-level learning even when reading and spelling are difficult. The strategies and tools presented throughout the course help ensure that literacy challenges do not become barriers to learning.

Deep, Targeted Review

  • Exploration and discussion of the implementation of the Introductory Course material
  • Celebrating implementation successes and problem solving implementation challenges
  • Reviewing teacher-requested concepts from the Introductory Course

Combined Anglo Saxon

  • Learn the meaning and spelling of the most common Anglo Saxon based prefixes and suffixes using Adapted American sign to aid transfer and provide cues when learninge
  • Learn how Anglo Saxon based prefixes, roots and suffixes combine to form multi-syllable words
  • Use knowledge of syllable types to “yank” words into chunks, making it easier to understand and remember when to double a consonant or drop a silent e, etc.
  • Review and deepen understanding of how to strip off prefixes and suffixes to reveal the root or base word and break words into more manageable chunks for reading, spelling, and vocabulary acquisition.
  • Create a suffix key to track the meaning and spelling of the most common Anglo Saxon based suffixes.
  • Enjoy memory-friendly and entertaining phonics stories that use music, drama, and humor to clarify spelling patterns such as –es vs. –s, y to i, -ed or t/d, -le vs. –el.
  • Learn how to look for meaning and word origin clues to make spelling choices and clarify common multi-syllable spelling confusions

      Pre-Course Asynchronous Work

      There is asynchronous work to be completed before the course begins. This portion provides critical background knowledge and lays the foundation for success in the live sessions. There is a quiz at the end of this material. It is estimated that completing pre- and post- course asynchronous work will take approximately three hours.

      Video 1: Mouth Foundation Review – This video review covers:

      Video 2: Vowel Key Letter Side – This video covers Core Anglo Saxon Consonant phonics patterns and Complex Anglo‐Saxon phonics patterns.

      Video 3: Dictionary Diving – This video demonstrates a game for students to practice identifying syllable beats and corresponding vowel sounds.

      Video 4: Myrtle the Mouth Trickster – This video demonstrates a game that helps students practice their decoding skills. It can grow with students as they advance.

      Video 5: Supported Reading Routine – This video shows how to use a supported reading routine to help students with guided practice applying decoding strategies in authentic text.

      Video 6: Safe Sentences – This video demonstrates how to use ‘safe sentences’ with students so they can apply familiar spelling patterns during supported sentence writing.

      Video 7: Quick Words and Fluency Packets – This video shows a lesson on building automaticity and word recognition through repetition and timed reading.

      Video 8: Sketchpad spelling Routine – The Sketchpad Spelling routine teaches common words with unexpected spellings through color coding, mental imagery, motor memory, and daily retrieval practice.

      Video 9: Flashback Sentences – Flashback Sentences group together common words with an unexpected spelling pattern into one memorable sentence.

      Video 10 & 11: Parts of Speech and Elaborating Sentences & Hot Potato Parts of Speech – These videos introduce a student-friendly way to teach and review the five main parts of speech: nouns (as subjects and objects), verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases.

      Video 12: Suffix Sort – A Suffix Spell Sort teaches students to make accurate suffix spelling decisions by breaking the process into manageable steps

      Video 13: Diva y to i to add –es – The Diva y to i and add -es routine teaches students how to spell plurals and present tense words that end with a solo Diva y. 

      Live Sessions

      During each live sessions, will cover the material listed, however we have observed that the exact timeframe needed for each topic varies a bit for each group. It is a core belief of Wired for Reading to plan extensively but remain flexible to respond to the needs of participants. While we include times for each topic, we may adjust the pace of learning to meet the unique needs of each class.

      To increase active engagement and model recommended best practices, there will be extensive turn and talk and reflective review of material, as well as large group and small group practice and application of concepts.
