My goal as a Wired for Reading tutor is simple: to help students close the gap between their reading ability and their intellect. As a former Spanish teacher and lifelong student of language and literature, Wired for Reading is a natural fit for me. I love Wired for its linguistics-based approach and for its emphasis on engaging students through skits, games and stories. I am also trained in Orton-Gillingham.

I am a retired educator with thirty years of experience in education both as a classroom teacher and elementary school principal. I am deeply committed to helping students grow in confidence and skills. Often students who struggle with literacy face frustrations in school, but when we bring fun and joy to learning, both student and teacher are empowered. Wired for Reading provides a framework that leverages games, stories, and the arts to touch every child in a powerful and effective way. It is a privilege to help students “turn the page” and see themselves as capable learners. Wired for Reading instruction is firmly rooted in what science tells us about learning to read. As a private tutor, I adjust instructional strategies to fit each student’s specific needs, while remaining true to the Wired for Reading curriculum.

I delight in the individuality of each of my students and find that the words of Benjamin Disraeli capture well the joy of this work: “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches but to reveal to him his own.” I am well educated in the areas of learning and the design of learning systems, as well as attentional challenges. My sessions are usually held in the student’s home although I see some students at their school and I predominantly use the Wired for Reading and Handwriting Without Tears programs.

When my first child was diagnosed with dyslexia, I was referred to the Wired For Reading website to look for a tutor. I decided that not only would I find a tutor for my daughter, but that I would take the courses to become a tutor for other children. While I live in the Washington DC area, the majority of my work is done virtually, so everyone can have access Wired for Reading no matter where they live. As a Special Education teacher, I heard all too often the words “I can’t read.” After years of working with struggling readers, and trying to discover how to best teach them, I discovered Wired for Reading! Using this fun, entertaining, linguistic based program full of stories, songs and sometimes silliness, I want to tell everyone: Yes! You CAN read, and I can teach you! With lessons that don’t even seem like learning, I’ve seen students grow in ability and confidence (and parents are often astonished at what they learn along with their child, too!).
I am a former Special Education teacher and teacher coach with a degree in Special Education, a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology and Certification as a School Psychologist. Beyond the letters following my name, I love games, drama, singing, dancing and being a kid with kids.

After 18 years teaching English, my career pivoted as I watched my son struggle with reading. Searching for an approach, I discovered how the science of reading-aligned with explicit instruction changes a child’s trajectory. Having a dyslexic child, I know the impact of differentiated instruction and strong relationships. I center these in my practice, ensuring that children both thrive and find joy.
Wired for Reading’s linguistic approach allows students to become “language scientists,” discovering the English language’s complexity, and stories and multisensory instruction help students develop deep understanding. I hold a Masters in English, a Reading Science Certificate, and am trained in Orton Gillingham, allowing me to strategically implement multiple techniques.

My tutoring philosophy: Like Shakespeare said — The play’s the thing! As a teaching theater artist, I love incorporating movement and theater games — many of them drawn from my acting and improvisation training — to jump-start student engagement and make learning stick. I’ve found an arts-based approach to be particularly effective with students who struggle with focus and/or anxiety.
In addition to being an expert on silly faces, I have some formal education, including a Certificate in Writing for Children from the University of Washington; a JD from the University of Arizona; and a BA in Political Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame.

I am now very pleased and proud to be a Certified Wired for Reading Specialist. Wired for Reading’s multi sensory approach with stories, games, music, and drama is fun and engaging. It’s wonderful to watch students discover how smart and capable they really are. Since the link between handwriting and literacy is fundamental and important, I am also certified to teach Handwriting Without Tears.

My mission is to create a fun, responsive and individualized learning experience so that every student feels safe to be curious as well as capable of taking on the challenge in front of them. I love helping students recognize their strengths, and I am careful to set learners up to achieve many small successes on their way to independent reading and writing. I am especially passionate about creating trauma-informed learning spaces. In addition to my training in Wired for Reading, I draw from over ten years of experience as a classroom teacher and a master’s degree in educational psychology. I currently practice in a school, and so I am not accepting private students at this time.

My students love learning to read using Wired for Reading because they have fun and experience success – two powerful motivators. Their parents love watching their kids go from timid or tearful about reading to feeling confident and competent. I love teaching using the games, skits, music and creativity. As my student readers transition into writers, I work with them to explore writing techniques that build upon their Wired for Reading skills.

I care deeply about giving children the tools they need to read and write. Each child is a unique puzzle of strengths and needs. With personal attention, and the skills I’ve learned from WFR and Handwriting Without Tears, I help students reach confidently for their potential. We’ll use stories, acting, and drawing to engage the creative self. Direct, well-structured information will feed the organizational self. I bring to my West Seattle, home-based practice six years as a school tutor, three of which I used WFR and HWWT with K-5 students, and three years as a WFR reading coach for four children. I am also a mother and an artist.

As an educator for over 20 years, the best part of my work is helping students find their strengths and talents and seeing the progress they make toward their learning goals. As a Certified Wired for Reading Specialist, I address the needs of students with reading and spelling challenges using music, drama, movement, games and tactile approaches, thus giving students numerous ways to connect to and remember what they learn. I am also trained in Handwriting Without Tears and I use a variety of other resources to address reading comprehension and writing challenges.

As a linguist, both by training and by heart, my main goal is to help students become skilled readers and writers through the lens of understanding language as a system. My experience with Language Arts, World Languages, and Special Education brings a wide body of knowledge and critical teaching skills to the practice of Wired for Reading. I design and personalize my lessons around each student’s particular needs and strengths to help them acquire the tools necessary to overcome their reading challenges. I strive to create a nurturing and creative learning environment that allows students to develop self-confidence, initiative, ownership for learning, as well as how to advocate for themselves. I enjoy working in tandem with students’ families, their teachers, and other professionals to develop a roadmap that provides to families a thriving educational experience they have always wanted for their child.
