FOUNDATION INTENSIVE COURSE

Author and Instructor: Laura Rogan, M.A., M.Ed. Participants MUST have fully completed the Introductory Course as a prerequisite to taking this workshop.

Designed for those who have completed the introductory course, the new Wired for Reading Foundation Intensive Workshop delves more deeply into the teaching and implementation of the linguistics based Foundation level. As a workshop-style course, we will focus on the key Foundation lessons, including:

  • The Reading Brain as a Team
  • Razzle Dazzles and Frazzles
  • The Language Lab
  • Consonant and Vowel Mouth Cards
  • Sound Side of the Vowel Key
  • Make it Match
  • Make it Match with blocks
  • New Game: What’s your Angle?
  • Sketchpad Spelling routine for sight words.

Optional: One credit through Seattle University Professional Development program EPDLA 900 for $40 a credit or 10 Washington State clock hours at $2 per clock hour. Credits earned may apply towards Washington State teacher certification and for advancement on the salary scale.

Participants will self-select one of three different learning experiences:

SOAK IT IN

As participants observe and ask questions in a small group setting, the Wired for Reading Expert will teach the material as they would to students. Once the expert has taught the concept, participants will practice the material with their shoulder partner and play games to reinforce the content. As the workshop unfolds, the expert will assess participants’ readiness to try teaching targeted material to their shoulder partner.

SHOW AND GO

In a small group setting, the Wired for Reading Expert will briefly demonstrate the content and process to refresh participants’ memory; then participants will teach the material to their shoulder partner and receive feedback from both the expert and their peer. All participants will have the chance to play the role of student and teacher at various points throughout the workshop.

READY TO FLY

Participants will teach the concept to their shoulder partner in a small group setting and receive feedback from both their peer and their Wired for Reading Expert. The focus of this group is to deepen your own skills in teaching both the content and the process, including error handling and pacing. At the end of each breakout session the Expert will facilitate a group debriefing time for participants to share questions and implementation strategies, as well as discuss challenging teaching situations
